I had been suffering from “gap” teeth for several years. My orthodontist explained to my mother and I that gap teeth are caused by a variety of factors, such as jaw and tooth size, missing teeth, or early childhood tooth loss. As one of the most common orthodontic issues, my gap was between my front teeth but a gap can occur anywhere in the mouth.
I was 14 when I started my treatment. My mom was initially concerned that we were beginning treatment too early or that I might outgrown the problem, but Dr. Zaytoun explained that the spacing between my teeth would most likely become more severe over time. An untreated gap in my teeth could lead to dental or bite collapse or, worse, it could increase my risk of gum disease.
We chose to correct my gap teeth with Invisalign, and after 18 months the treatment was successful. I’m so glad we took the time to understand the issue and begin treatment early!
