Fixing My “Gap” Teeth

The excessive spacing between my two front teeth wasn't large enough to appear to be a missing tooth but it was clearly noticeable when I smiled.

My orthodontist explained to my mom and I that it can be caused by a number of factors such as jaw size and tooth size, congenitally missing teeth, or early childhood tooth loss. It turns out a gap is one of the most commonly occurring problems in orthodontics. My gap is between my front teeth but I found out a gap can occur anywhere in the mouth.

I was 14 when I started treatment. My mom wondered if we should wait until I was older. She asked the doctor if I would “outgrow” the condition. But the doctor explained that problems that occur with excessive spacing will become more severe as I get older.  It can lead to “dental or bite collapse” over time. It could also increase my risk of periodontal or “gum” disease.

I chose to correct the gap between my teeth with Invisalign. It took about 18 months but was worth the effort.
